There's nothing I can say about Passat
diesels that has not already been written. Long recognised as the best
engineered of all modern cars, you only have to drive this one to realise
why. It also explains why second hand
prices are so firm. The last owner
traded this one in to me after owning it for 7 years during which time he has
done 80,000 virtually fault free miles.
It now has a recorded 208,000 miles and comes with full service history
to 120,000 miles. He has had it serviced
independently since then. I have been
using the car for a while myself and have been delighted with it.
My family ran a virtually identical model estate with a similar mileage for over 20,000 faultless miles and only sold it as our children approached six feet tall! We replaced it with an identically engined VW Sharan because we had been so pleased with it in terms of performance, economy and reliability. The Golf had done 168,000 miles when we sold it and ran perfectly. The Sharan had done 185,000 miles when we sold it – again still running perfectly.
So, 208k may sound like a lot of
miles but for these excellent cars it is neither unusual or anything to worry
about. Many cars like this have done
over to 300k and still drive perfectly well.
The true test of any diesel engine is how it starts from cold and this
one starts instantaneously even though the pre heaters are thermostatically
controlled and only come in when the temperature drops below 5 degrees celsius
– as they are supposed to. I have driven this car for over 500
miles myself and it has averaged over 50 mpg and has driven perfectly.
Finished in dark blue the body
and paintwork is immaculate with just a small scuff on the front near side wing
which will be repaired soon. The lacquer coat on the bonnet is not good and
this too will be sorted very soon.
Otherwise immaculate. Inside, the carpets and upholstery are in a
dark charcoal and are all in excellent order too – not even the
driver’s seat shows any significant wear which is remarkable given its
age and mileage. Inside they are remarkably spacious –
especially in the rear seats. You also get a good load capacity even before you
fold the 60/40 split rear seats down. The car has the original stereo
unit, central locking, power steering, air conditioning etc. It has
multiple airbags and electric windows all round which open and close with the
central locking as required.
It is powered by VW's excellent
1900 cc turbo diesel (TDi) unit - so you get outstanding fuel economy and
reliability and remarkably good performance too. The trip computer is
showing over 50 mpg and up to 60 mpg or more is possible on a longer run. As with all our cars a full inspection is welcomed.
