Part Exchange

The first thing to say is that you will get more for your old car if you sell it privately.

However, I will happily take your car in part exchange if you do not want the hassle of selling it yourself.

 Selling privately has several disadvantages namely and here are just a few:

• you may need the cash from your old car before you can buy the new one
• if I take the car - so long as it is owned by you (i.e. you haven't stolen it or got outstanding HP or other loans secured against it) you don't need to worry about any comeback
• you can drive your car to me and drive the new one away
• you don't have any extra cars on your driveway
• you don't have to clean it!
• you don't have to worry about dubious characters, knocking on your door and asking lots of daft questions.

If you can't be bothered with all that hassle then I will generally be able to make an offer.  Since I really want to concentrate on cars less than ten years old - please don't expect too much for an older car.  The price will be realistic but it will probably be less than you will get if you sell it privately.  In other words, if you can be bothered – sell it privately.

Lots of car dealers will offer you more than your car is worth - certainly to them.  They, of course, have bumped up the price of the car they are selling by an equivalent amount - and usually more. The most obvious example of this is the “Minimum £1,000 p/x on your old car” – in which case you know that if you have no car to part exchange they will almost certainly take £1,000 straight off the screen price..
